We’re always looking for ways to get up and moving, so when we found out that May was National Walking Month we couldn’t wait to walk all over it.

Splitting our team into four houses: Hi-Tops, Brogues, Wellies and Loafers, we competed against each other to get the most steps possible last week. We set the ambitious target of reaching 2 million steps over 4 days and if we met the goal we’d donate £500 to our Charity of the Year, Metabolic Support UK (previously known as Climb).

To get our step counts up, we put on extra activities each day with extra steps rewarded to the winning team.

Tuesday – Catwalk

We gave each team five minutes to create a show shopping “look” using whatever they could find around the office and then walk down the runway. Shredded newspaper shirts are in this season…right?

Wednesday – Walk don’t run

Sports day came to Brass with our egg and spoon obstacle course. Brasscals were limbo-ing, crawling and spinning their way to step domination.

Thursday – Walk while you talk

We have a regular get together as a whole agency to chat through what’s going on and what’s coming up. But not forgetting our steps, we got a member of each team on their feet to get as many steps as possible while everyone else stuffed their faces.

Friday – Walk and strike a pose

Our grand finale was in the form of a photo challenge. Brasscals were tasked with getting a photo in which one person was upside down, one person was off the floor, two people had swapped an item of clothing and for bonus points…the photo needed to include a stranger and a dog. Resulting images below…

Did we hit our target?

The week was a resounding success, with a grand total of 2,272,807 steps we smashed our target and will be donating £500 to Metabolic Support UK. Team Loafers took the prize for most steps in the week with 690,409 steps. It was a fun way to get everyone off their ‘Brass’ and mixing with other teams across the wider agency. Competition was fierce with people doing late night walks, pacing round the office, and walking meetings in a bid to up their step count.

We asked some of the Brasscals what they enjoyed about the week…

From running home from the office to not stopping until the step counter hit 30,000, team Loafers really pulled out all the stops, and we’re thrilled to be victorious in Brass’ first Walk this May.

Danielle Stott, PR Account Manager

I was so proud to be part of Team Brogues and the wider Walk this May campaign. Together we managed more than 2.2 million steps in just 4 days. That is the equivalent of walking from Leeds to Barcelona and back! We moon walked, we cat walked and we strutted with style and all for a very good charitable cause.

We love getting our teeth stuck into a good challenge at Brass, and it was great to see the whole agency getting involved to raise money for Metabolic Support UK.

Paul McGann, Managing Partner

It was really rewarding organising this event alongside the New Gen team, everyone got really involved and super competitive. It was great to see everyone upping their game to out-step each other and we’ll definitely be organising events like this again in the future.

Orlaith Conlon, Junior Creative

Well (ie) what can we say…congratulations to Loafers – we tried our best and we look forward to the next Brass Charity Challenge. Bring it (wellingt) on!!!

Ruth Page, Business Development Manager

It was a bit of a shock to the system when I realised I only walked 3,000 steps a day. A few walking meetings and team challenges later we soon managed to hit 10k a day. Having everyone up and about made the office feel so much more energised (not to mention a little competitive!). Hopefully we will keep it up!

Emily Huyton, Senior Account Manager

The Wellies got a bit stuck in mud last week, coming in last but we had a great week supporting such a great cause. Catwalks, egg and spoon races, photo competitions.. all for charity. What’s not to love.
